Trend Report: Cutouts Are In
At the risk of revealing too much…we feel like we should tell you that cutouts – those sexy sections of uncovered skin – are very in. This season is all about peeks of obliques, slivers of shoulder, and daring glimpses of décolletage. The newest iterations of these slits and slashes are a cut above any we’ve seen in previous years (pun very much intended). As frequently as they appear on designer’s creations, they’re done in such unexpected ways nowadays that the trend feels brand new. We’ve worked it into several of our most popular silhouettes. Read on to see a smattering of our favorite styles:
The classic ballgown gets a very modern makeover from dramatic waist cutouts that lead straight into an exposed back. The resulting shape is cool, new, and arresting, likely to stop people in their tracks – if the stoplight red hue hadn’t done so already. Play up the modernity factor with smooth, flat-ironed tresses and kohl-rimmed eyes. For jewelry, pick high-impact, minimalist pieces with clean lines and plenty of metal.
What’s black and white and read…y to party? This striking graphic gown. Exposed sides, a mostly open back, plenty of front and center swaths of skin, and a slit up to there – there are almost too many cutouts to count, and we are completely okay with that. Accentuate the long lines of the paneled skirt with a pair of metallic sky-high heels and dial up the drama with smokey eyes, warm blush, and a deep lip color.
This rib-revealing prom dress capitalizes on another of the season’s key trends – the color yellow. This pale hue is soft and sweet, but sophisticated at the same time, much like this style’s fabrication. The lustrous sheen and crisp texture of taffeta have made it a formal dress favorite since the Fifties. Here it gets an elegant mermaid skirt and crystal-embellished waistline, affirming its ladylike appeal. Select crystal jewelry to complement the light-catching detail.
Refined stripes of gold beading throw a chic spotlight on this gown’s daring skin baring. Front and center, a diamond breaks up the beautiful halter neckline to show off the décolletage. The back is completely open, dipping low and cutting over into the waistline. Finally, a thigh-high slit leaves the left leg free to strut its stuff in front of everyone’s eyes. The navy and gold color pairing gives off a distinctive nautical vibe, which is fitting, since this provocative style is sure to make waves. Opt for a strappy white sandal to drive home the yacht party-ready message.
Two triangles and a diamond form a broken pyramid of cutouts on the bodice of this sleek and sexy dress, spicing things up a bit along with the open back. The seamed all-black silhouette gets an extra fashion boost from pearlescent beaded details at the waist and neckline. The neckline design looks like an ornate necklace from a few yards away. Soft jersey makes for a comfortable fit all night long and allows for plenty of movement, even within the elegant mermaid skirt.
Glitz, glam, and sultry glimpses of skin – this dress was designed with discerning divas in mind. Light-reflecting embellishment draws the eye straight to the cutouts, as they adorn the waistband and horizontal bodice straps. The seamed skirt falls gracefully to the floor in a jersey so soft you’ll want to live in it. When it comes to accessorizing, a dress like this calls for the more is more ethos. Sparkle away, starlet.
Show off that summer bod – namely, those toned abs – in this two piece dress’s half moon bodice cutout. Most of this showstopper’s attention-grabbing qualities lie within the glammed up confines of the top piece. Hand-stitched sequins and beads detail the high-necked front, which meets with an unexpected T-strap back. Talk about va-va-voom. The form fitting jersey skirt is fully lined with a stretch lining and finished with an embellished waistline to connect with the sparkle of the cropped top.
A full circle of rectangular cutouts forms a cage-like design around the waist of this sexy sheath. Crafted from soft jersey, the halter silhouette instantly owns the room with its bright red hue. Up the ante with twinkling jewels, a glossy lip, and a range of bronzy shadows. Part your hair on the side, add loose curls for texture, and sweep it over your shoulder for an enthralling finish.
A center cutout, revealed obliques, and an open back create artfully placed windows onto the skin in this red carpet-ready design. And then there’s the slit-up-to-there skirt. Cue: Long, appreciative whistle. Allover multi-color embellishments work with gold beaded trim to catch the eyes of everyone in the room. Every light is your light in this glamorous silhouette. Amplify the look-at-me effect with patent nude heels and rose gold chandelier earrings. Add in a pile of matching bangles for extra sheen.
Risqué cutouts show wide swaths of skin from the small of the back to the top – and pretty much every inch of the obliques. Add in the pin-up girl effect of the thigh-high slit and you have one of those dresses you just have to own. A short train and high neckline do their best to balance things out, but the design is still decidedly sexy. Mix plum, lavender, and grey shadows to create a compelling haze on the eyelid with plenty of liner and a defined natural lip. Echo the strappy look of the bodice with a high-shine heeled sandal with plenty of buckles.
